I am holding my breath about dinner conversation this year. To say my husband's family is conservative would be understating things a bit. Although, conversely, they are not very religious. I plan to tell funny stories about the kids, eat lots, and watch football! Any mentions of the president, war, or health care I am going to ignore.
I considered myself pretty cultured until I was planning my wedding. Bridal magazines and books informed me of all sorts of rules of etiquette with which I was not familiar. I tried to follow them, but couldn't help wondering how many people still care about some of those details. Meanwhile I am often confronted with much more practical examples of rudeness that seem far more vexing than someone not spelling out the year on an invitation. So this is my guide to how I try to behave and would like to see others behave plus additional tips on living well in the modern world.
